As we continue celebrating our 70th anniversary, this edition of Segments reflects a theme at the heart of our story: how the work of one generation becomes the foundation for the next. The principles established by our earliest teams on projects like the Tooma-Tumut Tunnel in Australia’s Snowy Mountains nearly 70 years ago—technical rigor, close collaboration, and practical problem-solving in difficult ground—still guide how we work today.
That legacy is on display in a milestone we’re proud to share. The Long-Baseline Neutrino Facility Far Site Excavation Project, located nearly a mile underground in South Dakota, received the Underground Construction Association’s 2026 Project of the Year Award in the $100M–$500M category—recognition of the technical expertise, scale, complexity, and collaboration behind a project advancing both underground construction and scientific discovery.
This issue highlights our team’s ingenuity through a project update on the Northeast Ohio Regional Sewer District’s Shoreline Storage Tunnel, a Technical Insight on the rapid evolution of geotechnical instrumentation, and a look at how our private-sector work has grown “beyond wine” into a broad range of underground spaces.
