Sam Swartz

Tunnels and Underground Engineering Practice Lead

Sam Swartz is a principal engineer with more than 25 years of engineering experience as a project manager and design lead on major tunnel design projects. He has led significant projects in the water, wastewater, transportation, and energy markets, delivering a wide range of services — including planning, preliminary design, final design, and design support during construction. Since joining Delve Underground in 1998, Sam has worked on some of the firm’s largest projects across the United States, Canada, and Australia. His technical knowledge encompasses analysis of settlements above tunnels and development of mitigation measures; design of primary and final tunnel linings with a particular focus on segmental lining design; and geotechnical assessment of ground conditions and risks for soft ground tunneling and microtunneling, and methods of ground improvement.

Sam holds an MS in Civil Engineering from the University of California at Berkeley and a BS in Civil Engineering from the University of Michigan. He is a registered Professional Engineer in Illinois, Ohio, North Carolina, Michigan, Oklahoma, Texas, Washington, and California.
